Online Drop-In Support For Adolescents With Eating Disorders (Silver Linings Foundation)

Calgary Silver Linings Foundation offers an online drop-in group for teens with eating disorders. This drop-in group for adolescents (14 to 17 years of age) will allow teens to connect and receive support during this time of uncertainty. Topics may include, but are not limited to body image, social media, isolation, and emotional regulation. The facilitator will adapt the content based on the needs of the participants.

The facilitator will also offer some insight on healthy emotion regulation skills. Emotion regulation is a person’s ability to successfully manage and respond to an emotional experience. Throughout the day, people automatically use emotion regulation strategies to cope with overwhelming situations. However, some of these strategies are healthy, and some are not. It takes time and practice to learn how to manage these overwhelming thoughts and emotions with healthy strategies.

This group does not differentiate between the different types of eating disorders because it is our goal to focus on the underlying emotional issues that are common to all eating disorders.

Eligibility for the group:
This is a community-based support group with limited resources and it is expected that struggles with suicidal ideation and any self-harm behaviours are addressed appropriately with your treatment team. Adolescents must also be medically stable. Both caregiver and teen must consent to participating in the group.

This support group is not therapy and is not a substitute for treatment.
